Military Monday: The Republic Plot: Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin

In respect of this week being the 95th Anniversary of The 1916 Easter Rising here are photographs of the graves of some of those who fought to make Ireland a Republic free from the tyranny of British rule. Some of those interred in and around the Republican Plot in Glasnevin played a role in the 1916 Rising, some in the Irish War of Independence, and some in the Irish Civil War.

Tombstone Tuesday: 'Saved by the bell': Gresham Family Vault

The now broken pedestal which sits atop the Gresham Family Vault once supported a bell with a chain running from the bell into the vault. The Gresham lady for whom the tomb was erected had a morbid fear of being buried alive, and so to accommodate her wishes the bell pedestal was erected with the purpose of allowing her to ring the bell and be rescued should she awaken from the sleep of death. It is further alleged that she was buried in a casket with an easy to open spring lock, and that the tomb was built in this design so that it would be tall enough for her to stand upright while awaiting her rescuers.
